Kysymyksiä ja vastauksia mobiili-Skypestä

Jatkona aiempaan blogimerkintään. Skypen julkistama mobiilisovellus on herättänyt kummastusta, sillä Java-sovellus on erikoinen yhdistelmä data- ja GSM-puhesovellusta. Älypuhelinkäyttäjät ovat toivoneet aitoa IP-puhelusovellusta.

Skypestä on vastattu kysymyksiin. Keskiviikon uutisjuttuni kertoo, että Skype on halunnut tuoda mobiilipalvelunsa massamarkkinoille, ja tähän tarkoitukseen Java-pohjaista sovellusta pidettiin parempana. Lisäksi Skype suosittelee kiinteähintaista puhepakettia operaattorilta, kuten se tekee yhteistyössä 3-operaattorin ('Tre') kanssa.

Kannattaa lukea myös Tietoviikon juttu, koska he saivat eri selitykset, eli tärkein syy IP-puheluiden puuttumiseen IP-puhelusoftiasta olisi akkukesto.

Jatkoin vielä keskustelua. En ehdi nyt suomentaa keskustelua, joten saatte lukea kysymykset ja vastaukset sellaisenaan englanniksi. Kysymyksiin vastasi Skypen mobiilipuolen tuotepäällikkö Nicholas Babaian.

TL: What's the problem with offering a VoIP client for Symbian S60? Are operators and/or Nokia blocking this somehow?

NB: Users have told us that they want to be in touch with their Skype friends anywhere and anytime -- not just in a WiFi hotspot or on an expensive smartphone. What's important to our users is important to us. While we're not ruling out a more platform-specific approach in the future, we felt that Skype for your mobile would be a good way to make more people happy more of the time.

TL: You already have a VoIP client for Windows Mobile platform (smartphones and PDAs). How is Symbian so different?

NB: We've had the Windows Mobile client since early 2004, so it's a tradition from the days when Skype was still a tiny start-up. As we've grown in popularity and ambition, we've chosen to allocate our resources to a product that would serve a broader range of users and a broader range of devices in more places. Not just WiFi hotspots or expensive smartphones.

This is not to say that we wouldn't focus on narrower user groups at some point, but as I said, right now Skype for your mobile is a good way to make more people happy more of the time.

TL: How is it possible Fring is able to offer Skype VoIP, but Skype itself isn't? This is truly puzzling.

NB: It's more a matter of talking to a broad base of users and finding out what they want. What emerged from our research was the desire to avoid spending a lot of money on an expensive smartphone, to be able to call your mom in Australia on Skype from the park, and to use Skype for long periods of time without running out of battery juice. Skype for your mobile delivers on these fronts.

We would be foolish to focus on tech elites only, while leaving behind a massive group of regular folks who have "normal" mobile phones in their pockets.

That said, the mobile space is very important to us and we're working to bring the Skype experience to an ever-broader range of mobile devices, from low-end to high-end. As an example of the latter, we've worked with Nokia to make Skype available on its WiFi-centric N800 and N810 internet tablets. We're working on many fronts to delight our users.

Tulkitsen Nicholas Babaianin vastauksia siten, että Skype haluaa tarjota massamarkkinoiden Skype-ohjelman, mikä tarkoittaa nykyisin käytännössä Java-sovellusta.

Kiinnostavaa on se, että Skype perustelee Symbian-version puuttumista sillä, ettei se halua palvella vain "eliitin kalliita älypuhelimia", mutta ohjelma on silti tarjolla paljon pienemmän käyttäjäryhmän N800:lle ja N810:lle. Olennainen ero on tietenkin se, ettei niissä ole puhelinta. Ne eivät siis ole osa mobiilioperaattoreiden bisnesmalleja.

Tulkintani on, että Skype näyttää haluavan tarjota palvelun, joka soveltuu myös mobiilioperaattoreiden bisnesmalleihin. Se tarkoittaa, etteivät puhelut ole kokonaan maksuttomia, vaan operaattorin kanssa solmitaan erilaisia kiinteähintaisia paketteja maan sisällä tai useiden maiden välillä.

Skypen lanseeraama palvelu ei toimi Suomessa, kun täällä ei ole tarjolla minkäänlaista pakettia palvelun kanssa. Nyt on vain hankalasti hahmoteltava yhdistelmä GSM-puhe- ja Skype-hinnoittelua. Skypellä ei ole toimistoa Suomessa, mutta eihän se yhteistyön tekemistä estä kokonaan.

Skypen tärkein viesti alusta alkaen on ollut vapauttaa ihmiset siitä, että puheluista maksetaan minuuttien tai etäisyyden perusteella. Tämä Kännykkä-Skype on epäonnistunut tältä osin, koska viesti ei toteudu. Ei ainakaan Suomessa.
